M365 Weekly Newsletter
Issue #96
☁️What’s on my mind
I did a stupid thing. Not the first time and probably not the last time, either. My intention was to optimize the creation of the newsletter but it turned out I made a mess. So, last week’s issue was totally ruined with bad links leading to nowhere. I apologize for this. If you’re still interested in reading the previous issue with working links you can get it on my site (source).
Have a really great day.
Matic Z.
☁️Productivity & Modern Workplace
Use AI to overlay yourself on a whiteboard. This looks like something out of a Sci-Fi movie. A very useful trick.
What’s New in Microsoft Teams – October 2022 edition. One new feature that immediately caught my eye is that I can now view shared content in a separate window. It is much more convenient when you also need to communicate with other participants on the call via chat.
How to use Speaker Coach in Microsoft Teams meetings. Instead of being criticized by clients or colleagues when you’re giving a presentation, take the advice of a Speaker Coach, backed by AI. You’ll soon be a much better speaker that way.
It Really is Time to Say Goodbye to On-Premises Exchange. No matter how you look at your email system, it’s time to migrate it to the cloud. Now. Or at least as soon as possible. I can confirm from experience that in complex Exchange deployments, updating the whole setup has become a nightmare and a source of great stress for IT teams. However, when it comes to updating under the pressure of zero-day vulnerabilities, the situation quickly becomes unbearable. Exchange, you’ve been a good boy for decades. Now it’s time to switch to your cloud brother.
What is SharePoint, and what is it used for? Let’s go back to basics. What is Sharepoint, what purpose does it serve and what can be done with it? This is a great article with a comprehensive overview for those of you who have always wanted to know the basics but didn’t dare to ask.
☁️Sysadmin Stuff
RoboCopy – Ultimate Guide with Examples. A lazy admin always finds a way to do something more efficiently and faster, with less work. Robocopy is a legendary tool among sysadmins. This is the ultimate guide for those of you who work with loads of files.
Ban Custom Passwords in Office 365 to Prevent Users from using Guessable Passwords. In the part of the world where I live, a very bad habit developed years ago where many users choose their passwords according to the season. So “Summer2022” or “Winter2022” and the like are quite common passwords. What if you banned the use of passwords like that at the tenant level? It is possible.
Office 365 Offboarding Best Practices. In many countries, the correct way to terminate the resources of a worker who has left the company is legally defined. At least in terms of who is allowed to access their inbox and other personal and private data. However, the interests of the company and the smooth functioning of the work process must also be taken into account.
Complete Guide to Managing Linux with Intune. Practically everything from A to Z, explaining how to manage Linux servers with Intune. When I read articles like this, I have to wonder again and again how the IT landscape has changed in recent years. Heterogeneous environments like Windows and Linux live practically under the same roof and coexist beautifully.
☁️Security & Data Governance
Make Sure Your Confidential Teams Calls Are End-to-End Encrypted. Only with end-to-end encryption can you be almost sure that no one is listening in. How do you turn this kind of encryption on in Teams?
Practical Protection: Security Principles for Exchange Environments. Forget Exchange on-premises. This is so last year. This article describes security principles in scenarios where you use cloud services extensively. Exchange online is the way to go. Securely, of course.
Caffeine: A Phishing Kit Aimed at Stealing Microsoft 365 Details. Would you like to eliminate the competition? Use phishing-as-a-service. No, I don’t want to give you bad and illegal advice, but it’s certainly good to know that phishing attacks are almost easier to buy than a bottle of milk. And they are almost as cheap as milk.
☁️Noteworthy (long)reads
Microsoft 365 Throttling Stinks. There are situations where the mechanisms that keep Micorosft 365 running as smoothly as possible will hold you back so you don’t consume too many precious cloud resources. When will this happen and why? Read on.
Microsoft Full Circle. The way I see it, we might be able to put the current CEO of Microsoft alongside Steve. He’s doing good Jobs (pun intended). Under his leadership, Microsoft has literally opened itself up to open-source code and convergence with other competing technologies. I’m not a fan of the metaverse myself, but I can guess that even with his focus on VR, he will prove to be in the right place at the right time. If nothing else, shareholders will be happy.
Hybrid work is the future, and innovative technology will define it. Now that we are sitting in our offices more often again, many companies are finding that productivity has fallen. Is this a sign of silent quitting? Or could it be true that for the vast majority of workers, hybrid working represents the freedom they are not willing to give away? For many employees hybrid work represents a much better way to balance work and family life. But that’s only one way of looking at hybrid work.
